The best managers are great leaders.

But the truth is that a manager has to be a leader and a manager.  A manager's job should not be only about directing or controlling; the role of a manager should be about motivating and inspiring.

We need leadership in management as much as we need management in leadership. The path to becoming a manager generally is someone who has been a great employee. Someone who comes to work on time does a great job and is very effective at what they're doing. And now the company needs a manager. Often the company turns to this great employee and then makes them a manager.

Their role is now entirely new. It is about getting their job done through other people on their team. And rarely is the case that an employer takes the time, makes the time, and invests in training that new manager on how to be a leader.

So the first tip to being a great manager is to realize who you are and how your team judges and views you. You see, often in managers, all that power goes to their head, and now they're the boss, and they start acting like the boss.

They go to what comes naturally to many, utilizing a command and control method. In the end, Command and Control may work, but it only works temporarily until their team gets tired of it and begins disrespecting the new manager. They need to learn how to get their employees to want to get the work done for them.

It starts with mutual respect. How much admiration have you shown or shared with your team as a manager? Because it's a two-way street. Being self-aware and investing in your self-development are essential factors in becoming a very effective leader.

You have to have confidence in yourself. And your confidence is what your team thrives and feeds on.

If you're not truly good at everything and, be honest, you're not, especially in managing people and being a leader. There's nothing wrong with that. Your people are going to respect you for that. And that's just being real. It has the opposite effect if you're acting like a know-it-all.

Your people see right through that. It erodes the level of respect you get. You have to know how you're viewed.

I constantly hear this from managers and executives. "Well, my people all love me. They never say anything wrong to me. They never tell me what I'm doing wrong." Well, of course not.

They're your employees. They're your direct reports. They're not going to be that honest with you.  They won't.

I'm going to say it this way. They're going to kiss your butt. And make sure you feel good about yourself because nobody wants to tell the boss that what they're doing is ineffective. It just doesn't work that way. And if you're highly confident, but in a way that's not earned, you're on a challenging path.
